David Burke's Tribute To Mrs. Holmes

Hi all,

I went to visit Mrs. Holmes yesterday (Sept. 4, 2011) after church and spent a little under 1 hour with her and I totally enjoyed every second of it.

As soon as I arrived and inquired of her, I was taken directly to her room and there she sat on the bed with a big smile on her face. I went over to hug her and she stopped me, asked me to remind her of my name and then held my face firmly with her two hands and gave me a big kiss on the side of my mouth and said "thanks for coming David, you wouldn't know how much I appreciate this".

She then said that we should go out to the verandah and talk, as she shared room with another woman and she didn't want to disturb her. I helped her up, she took her walking stick and I couldn't help smiling as she gave me the unforgettable "Maddy" walk (though much slower) to the verandah. We went and sat in two chairs at one corner and got comfortable.

She explained to me that she lived alone at a flat in Mona and that last year her only Daughter Jennifer came from Canada to look for her and realized that she was always alone and lonely and could no longer take care of herself, so she came back in October of 2010 and moved her to the home. She seems to enjoy herself there as she was quite friendly with all her "housemates" (both male and female) and spoke to them mostly on a first name basis, well the women at least as she addressed all the men with the title of "Mr".

Now the home itself, is an older type with old furniture and wooden floors for the most part, but it was impeccably clean. I then asked her if there was anything at all she needed and she replied that all her needs were met at the home and the only thing that she would want is some light reading material from time to time (she made emphasis on the lightness and "short" fashion the literature should be in). We then started to talk about the good old days at Jamaica College. She remembers that she taught there for 26 years, but she couldn't quite remember the actual dates of tenure. She laughed out loud when I asked her if she remembered "you never never never, ever ever ever mark your power builder cards". then she expressed again (the second of about six times) how she appreciated my visit and said "it's so good to be in contact with my boys once again", then looked at me sheepishly and said "you don't mind if I refer to you as one of my boys do you?" to which I laughed and responded that the pleasure was all mine and that I would have it no other way.

Mrs. Holmes then had me tell her all about what I'm doing and my marital status and if I had any kids etc...... I even had to show her some pictures from my wallet. I then explained to her about the Facebook site Sydney had created and how all the tributes were flowing in and she was beside herself. She asked me to express her appreciation to all the participants and to let you all know that tutoring us was the greatest thing that ever happened to her and that we are always on her mind. She says that the name 'Sydney Murray' seemed quite familiar and that I should express special thanks to him for his creation. She said that there is no one special for her living in Jamaica and seemed quite open to the idea of having the tributes read to her. I read an excerpt of George Anthony McLaren's tribute to her and she laughed and said "but that's not me!"...... Lol.

Gentlemen, I also asked her if she knew that we had a nickname for her and she was absolutely clueless!!!!!! and then inquired as to what it was with a big grin her face. Somehow it seemed a bit callous to me, to let her know that we referred to her as "Maddy" (I simply did not know what type of twist to add it to make it seem endearing), so I told her she would hear when we do the tributes and she smiled eagerly and said "I can't wait!" She then went on to tell me that she quite enjoys the home and the only downside to it is that she's locked up there 24/7 and feels useless at times.

I didn't take anything for her, as I went straight from church and besides flowers (which Hugh Rose said he had sent) I couldn't think of what else to send.............. by the way Hugh, no flowers have arrived as yet. The only flowers there were in a beautiful bouquet that her daughter sent her and she says that she has received no other............... McLaren, she says that your names sounds familiar................... She says that with the exception of someone by the name of Peter Walters (an old boy who keeps in regular contact with her), I am the first old boy she has seen in many years and went on to express her appreciation............... She was born February 2, 1924 so she celebrated her 87th Birthday this year (see attached photo) ............. she has two grand daughters.................. her limp is as a result of her twisting her knee........... she is strongly steeped in the Catholic faith.................. her financial needs to cover any little want she might have is fully covered because she receives two pensions..............

We then chatted a bit more then she took me back to her room while introducing me to all who were out of their rooms as one of "her boys". She held my hand the entire time this time. I also met her "Gleaner partner", the lady that she reads the Daily Gleaner with every day. Back in her room she showed me all her photos of family and friends, and a card from "1 A" telling her to hurry up and get well and return to school (when she had her knee injury). I then told her I was leaving and she got up from her bed once more (even though I protested and told her it was okay) and said "No! I have to escort my guest to the front".       Courtney PalmerThank you for making that visit. I was thinking, even though I have heard the name used quite often, I really, absolutely HATE the name "MADDY". I didn't like it in high school and I certainly dont like it now. Should the tributes be forwarded to her, I truly hope all the references to her "nick name" be deleted!! Secondly, given the numbers and the memories, is it possible for us to have one Old Boy volunteer to visit her each day? I doubt that she would ask for anything but if the person visiting her could look around and see what she may need, maybe a luxury item, french soap, perfume, something, we could all one at a time send something down to her.

      David BurkeYes I remember that "Birdman" and also I just remembered that I spent my very first day in 1 Murray and when - went home and told my older brother (of 11 years) he told me not to worry he would take care of it. Well surely enough at the end of lunch on Tuesday (my second day at JC) a teacher came and took me over to 1 Musgrave. Thank God for small mercies......... Lol!!!!

"you should never never ever put a mark of any kind on any Power Builder, never never ever". I went to JC in 1972-1977 and she left an indelible mark on me both she and our Religious knowledge teacher Mr. Gayle. Those were lovely days the best days of our lives.
