The Mathematician and the Military Officer

Mr. Cummings seen here above eating after he was fed, enjoyed his meal immensely. He patiently devoured every bite all the way to the licking of his fingertips. As he held on to his last bone the Lieutenant Colonel kindly had to say to him, “I think you are all done Sir” and took his empty plate away from his grasp. How we wished we had seconds to give him. What we didn’t know at the time was that we were witnessing Mr. Cummings spending his last Christmas with us and eating the last slice of Christmas cake that he would have had on these hallowed grounds that not only defined his life, but shaped the lives of so many young gentlemen who have experienced the privilege of graduating from this over 200 year old prestigious Institution endowed with intriguing history and a rich heritage. Unfortunately Mr. Cummings passed away on January 18, 2015, exactly 1 month after his last (JC ) supper. Heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones as we await the announcement of his funeral service, which is expected to be in Kingston Jamaica.

JC Supervisor and Mathematician, Samuel Cummings is seen here in a jovial mood at the inaugural Jamaica College Past Educators Reunion. (JCPER)

The Lieutenant Colonel and aspiring Humanitarian traveled all the way from Dallas Texas to attend the inaugural Jamaica College Past Educators Reunion in Kingston Jamaica on Friday December 19, 2014. It was her first trip to the popular and largest English speaking Caribbean island in the sun and she carried with her a passion to provide aid to the retired educators after learning about the event through a friend. Upon arriving at Jamaica College, which was her first scheduled stop she was warmly greeted by the retired educators and jumped right into the mix of things, helping the organizers, to provide, water and food, assisting the elderly that were wheel chair bound and helping with video and photo coverage of the event.

We hope the decorated US military officer enjoyed her maiden voyage to Jamrock. We are grateful that she not only made the decision to serve her country, but has has also found it within her to serve others. It was a pleasure to have her and I look forward to working with her on similar humanitarian projects in the future. Thanks for your support.
