When I relay snippets of my upbringing the youths of today, they look at me like I am from Mars. Back in my days, some mothers did not pick and choose words when it came to verbal chastising of their unruly children, the words could be harsh, searing and cutting.
One famous phrase a kid growing up in the ghetto would often hear was, ' you are not going to turn out to be anything good but a criminal' Of course, in modern society, the reversed psychology would be ‘you can be all that you can be and anything that you want to be.’
